directed by Jill Greenhalgh
Vigia means watchfulness. The latest performance by Jill Greenhalgh, with an international cast of twelve women, is a response to a brutal sequence of events near the USA border in northern Mexico. Over the past fourteen years several hundred women have gone missing, been murdered and found discarded in the deserts and shanty districts around the city of Juárez. Despite worldwide pressure and publicity, no-one has yet been successfully prosecuted. Over many years Greenhalgh has questioned how theatre can react to the situation of women internationally. Her work is often provocative and disturbing but also embodies a sense of remarkable beauty.
Developed over the past year in Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Spain, Argentina and Wales, The Acts — Vigia is presented alongside a series of debates, talks, films and installations curated by Jill Greenhalgh that provide further opportunities to reflect on the performance and its real-life context.
