France/2007/113 minutes/subtitled/PG. Dir: Hou Hsiao-Hsien. With Juliette Binoche, Song Fang, Hippolyte Girardot.
Cinema rarely soothes the heart and mind with the grace and quiet intellect of this new work from Taiwanese master Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Loosely based on the children’s film Le Ballon Rouge, it follows a boy and his babysitter through their adventures in an imaginary world as they are trailed by the titular balloon. The burnished russet and gold photography and long, floating tracking shots give Paris a swooning, dusky hue that is further bolstered by the mournful piano soundtrack. A warm, intricate and lyrical film that basks in the importance of life’s minutiae.
