USA/2004/87 mins/15. Dir: Steve Buscemi. With Casey Affleck, Liv Tyler, Mary Kay Place.
Having failed to make a go of things in New York, Jim, a would-be writer returns home to the Midwest. Faced again with his difficult family (over-protective mum, distant dad, suicidal brother), he soon remembers why he left. But when he’s forced to help his brother out Jim slowly begins to crawl out of his melancholic shell. The only real bright spot is his relationship (however stalled) with a local nurse, but for Jim to stop drifting and make some commitment is a big ask.
Steve Buscemi treats his characters with wry affection and provides ample opportunity for his fine cast to shine.
"What we cheer in Buscemi as an actor -- his gift for locating the elusive details that define a life -- is also there in his work as a director" - Rolling Stone
