The works of Alex Gene Morrison lure us into a world of slick and slimy mutant creatures, of colourful landscapes featuring melting heads, rotten carcasses and giant flies. Morrison has been described in The Guardian as an ‘acid punk artist’ and his multi-layered references flip us from anxiety to ecstasy and from melancholy to horror; often leaving us feeling narcotised.
Morrison’s paintings, collages and animations are bound together by a hypnotic aesthetic that is equally seductive and repulsive, evoking powerful human emotions such as desire, fear, disgust and wonder. A sensation of searching for something yet unknown that may provide enlightenment runs through the work.
This exhibition continues our successful ‘Assembly: Art in the Bar’ programme and will be the first in our temporary Café/Bar in Chapter’s Stiwdio, located here for the duration of Chapter’s redevelopment until mid 2009.
