Mexico/Italy/1989/117 mins/subtitled/18. Dir: Alejandro Jodorowsky. With Axel Jodorowsky, Blanca Guerra.
This flamboyant and gory delight centres on Fenix, a young man who is confined in a mental hospital. Through a series of flashbacks we see that he was traumatized as a child: when he and his family were circus performers he saw his father cut off his mother’s arms and then commit suicide. He escapes the hospital and rejoins his mother who forces him to become ‘her arms’ as the two undertake a grisly campaign of murder and revenge.
