Rupert Clamp has been working with contemporary and historical maps of Chapter and the locality to create a collage on the walls of our Caffi Bar.
At first glance the maps, diagrams and other cartographical paraphernalia hint at locations associated with the exhibition space. However, on closer inspection the ideas connecting these various findings are far from clear. Several drawings and maps seem unrelated whilst the scale across the artwork remains uncertain or inconsistent. You are tempted to unravel the problem, as though assembling clues or interpreting archaeological remains, all the while adding to the work by projecting onto it your own knowledge of the area, experiences and assumptions.
As the merging of present and past is explored through the installation, tales of Victorian explorers’ routes emerge placing the building and the city’s rich past back onto a map of Cardiff. These journeys through time playfully challenge our own stories, whether they are fact or fiction.
Rupert Clamp graduated from the University of Derby in 1995, and in 2008 achieved a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Training. He has exhibited across the UK in both solo and group exhibitions including Fighting Man at Vane, Newcastle. He is currently working as a creative consultant with Sheffield County Council to help research and develop their public art strategy.
Clamp is based in Marsden, West Yorkshire.
