Charu lives a lonely and idle life as her husband devotes more time to his newspaper than to their marriage. Realising that his wife needs companionship, he asks his brother-in-law and cousin to keep her company. However, after several months, the pair’s feelings for each other move beyond friendship. Satyajit Ray evokes 1870s India with unhurried storytelling and striking imagery.
