USA /1979/2001/202mins/15. Dir: Francis Ford Copolla. With Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, Dennis Hopper.
Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novella ‘Heart of Darkness’ is now considered to be one of the greatest films about the Vietnam War, depicting the war as a descent into primal madness. Captain Willard, already on the edge, is assigned to find the AWOL Colonel Kurtz, rumoured to have set himself up in the Cambodian jungle as a local, lethal godhead. On his journey Willard encounters the uncounted casualties of war including draftees who prefer to surf and do drugs, a US Playboy Bunny show, a napalm and Wagner loving colonel and a jumpy photographer (Hopper on fine form), telling wild, reverent tales about Kurtz and building the myth.
