Sampler: Poetry Now

Following the sell-out success of the first event, Platform 1 hosts another evening of great poetry featuring Cardiff poets Atkinson, Finch, Greenslade and Powell.
Doors open at 7.15pm. First reading starts at 8.00pm prompt.
£3/£2,50 (on the door)

'sampler: #2 poetry. now.' will showcase 4 Cardiff-based poets, each of whom will be reading their own unique brand of poetry. To compliment their individual sets, a short anthology (or sampler) of their work will be given free with admission.

The 4 poets reading on this occasion are:

 - the 'cherry' of the group, Tiffany Atkinson, Berlin-born, Tiffany Atkinson has lived in Cardiff since 1993, which is much longer than she has lived anywhere else. She enjoys her food. She probably drinks a little too much,  & considers  literature her greatest vice. In 1993 she won the BBC Radio Young Poet of the Year Competition. In 1994, she won it again. She fears she may have peaked much too early... Presently, she is on the teaching staff of the UWCC Creative Writing Course which keeps her on her toes. Of the 4 poets reading, Tiffany is somewhat new to the Cardiff reading circuit. But the strength of her subject matter, combined with wry observation and a keen & subtle wit, makes for an extremely interesting & not to say entertaining debut. She has recently enjoyed success with a selection of her poems being published in Poetry Life Magazine. Although, she does say she could try harder.

 - the well established Peter Finch,  a poet & short story writer living in Cardiff. He works both in traditional & experimental forms of writing & performing and is well renowned on the reading circuit. In the 60's & 70's he edited the ground-breaking literary magazine 'second aeon' & exhibited his visual poetry internationally to great acclaim. In the 80s Peter concentrated on performance poetry, which  went some way toward the development of his interest in 'sound poetry'. He has many publications under his belt, including poetry, self-publishing help guides, short stories & literary criticism. He is also decorated with many editorships. Currently the treasurer of the association of Little Presses, he ran Oriel Bookshop in Cardiff from 1975 until the Govt. intervened & ruined things in 1998.
Presently, Peter heads the revitalised Academi, the Welsh National Literature Promotional Agency. He still finds time to contribute monthly pieces on writing, books & the poetry scene to a vast array of periodicals. In short, he has been around for a very long time. Recent publications include 'Useful', 'Dauber', & 'Antibodies'. An eagerly awaited collection 'Food' is  due 2001, with a New & Selected Poems, 'Extremely Useful', earmarked for 2002.

 -  the highly acclaimed David Greenslade,  the founder of Y Wasg Israddol. He has been described as 'The Enfant Terrible of Anglo-Welsh Writing'. A prolific writer, he is the author of countless books for children, poetry, prose, fiction & non-fiction. He is a regular contributor to English & Welsh language newspapers  & magazines. Almost every major and minor publishing house this side of the Severn has seen David's work in print at one time or another. His monthly column Briwsion for the Welsh- American newspaper Ninnau, written in English, is highly regarded. David has also written for film, radio, theatre, performance & television. He currently works as a tutor for the YMCA & teaches Creative Writing for Cardiff University. Recent publications include 'Old Emulsion Customs', 'Each Broken Object' & the critically acclaimed 'Creosote'. His latest collection, 'Cambrian Country', is due  September 2000.

 -  the infamous Kerry-Lee Powell , born in Montreal, Canada, she has lived in Antigua & Australia before moving to Cardiff in 1991. She has recently re-settled in Cardiff after a year long stint in London, where she worked as a researcher for the Terrence Higgins Trust. In 1997, she was head hunted by Bernice Reubens for a week-long fiction workshop at Hay-On-Wye. Between 1997 & 1998 Kerry-Lee was the Director of Working Title Writers, a company set up to promote literature in Wales  organising readings, educational workshops in schools & colleges, & publication advice to first time writers. As co-founder, Kerry-Lee was at the helm of the Poetry Slams held at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, which helped revitalise the interest in poetry in South Wales. Her own poetry has been published in a wide variety of small & large presses throughout the UK & abroad. Her forthcoming collection of poetry, 'Stray Bullets', is  imminent & a short story, 'Vulnerable Adults', will appear in a Virago anthology later this year.
