At a time when we have truly entered the digital age, where mobile phone cameras are omnipresent, and access to the world wide web of image distribution is never more than a stone's throw away, attitudes towards the photographic image and its veracity as a document have yet again mutated. How contemporary artists using photography situate themselves within these shifts is the central subject of this conference.

With respect to new trends in documentary photography, and to define current practice which moves far beyond a re-telling of decisive moments of truth, the term Mockumentary, used in television and movie-making, comes to mind. This evocative portmanteau of mock and documentary was originally coined for films pretending to be documentaries, while employing fiction to satirise.

Taking the notion of 'mockumentary' as its cue, the conference will explore how photographers today, and in the past, have reacted to our tempestuous relationship with reality and the world we live in. Using strategies of reconstructing past events, reinterpreting found photographs, creating fictional sets, or manipulating images, these current strategies parody, subvert, and, ultimately - by imbuing it with new life - celebrate and extend the genre of documentary photography.

Participating speakers include: David Campany (UK), Verena Kuni (Germany), Jan-Erik Lundström (Sweden), Russell Roberts (UK), John Slyce (USA) and Hito Steyerl (Germany), with artist presentations by Polly Braden (UK). Joan Fontcuberta (Spain), Miklos Gaál (Norway), Anne Hardy (UK), Stefanie Klenz (UK), Owen Logan (UK), Trish Morrissey (UK), Cornelia Parker (UK), and Roma Tearne (Sri Lanka).
