Under the stewardship of Sydney Newman, Armchair Theatre changed from a small-screen outlet for plays from the theatre into a showcase for cutting edge, contemporary plays especially written for television by a talented group of new young writers. This programme comprises two fine examples: Alun Owen’s Lena, O My Lena (1960), starring Billie Whitelaw and directed by Ted Kotcheff; and Night Conspirators (1962) starring Peter Wyngarde, written by Robert Muller and directed by Philip Saville.
