Tina is a Swedish customs officer with a nose for trouble – quite literally, as her heightened sense of smell is able to sniff out the guilt on anyone who brings through contraband. This is until the equally striking-looking Vore comes through, hiding something she’s unable to identify. Clearly attracted to him, the two embark on a romantic relationship. As she discovers more about who she really is, she has to choose between the life she’s always known and Vore’s terrifying alternative offering.
Iranian-Swedish director Ali Abbasi has crafted a daring contemporary folktale that is a love story like no other, based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist (Let the Right One In). A highly accomplished and provocative treatment of gender ‘borders’, beauty and sexuality.
Winner, Un Certain Regard, Cannes 2017
