Minyoung Choi: On Water Under Snow

Celfyddyd Yn Y Bar

Minyoung Choi’s paintings are dominated by her memories and her imagination. At first glance the dreamlike scenes seem to suggest a narrative; figures are seen sharing food together in a forest clearing, or on bent knees making offerings. However it is the items that are placed in these settings that are of more importance to the artist.

Choi collects images of objects that interest her or bring her pleasure; images from her imagination, from history and the everyday. When positioned in these landscapes the objects take on a new kind of symbolism, making them exist once again, together at the same time.

Through the process of painting, rebuilding and reimagining she aims to establish a connection to landscapes and places that she longs for.
