In light of the ongoing situation the United Kingdom faces with Covid-19 and in line with medical advice, Chapter is closing with immediate effect until 19th April 2020.
This has been a very difficult decision to make but the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic is now at heightened levels and the health and safety of our audiences, customers, staff, volunteers, performers, artists and tenants is our number one priority. We believe that to temporarily close to the public is the best decision based on current advice.
In the last week or so, many film release dates have been moved forward and productions have been cancelled. It has become practically impossible for Chapter to plan, programme, market and deliver its artistic programme with any degree of certainty. Furthermore, our central social space – the beating heart of Chapter – has become significantly less busy than usual. This, together with social distancing becoming increasingly important in the tackling of this crisis, has made it effectively redundant as a community hub.
We realise that our decision has consequences for many other artists, businesses, organisations and members of our community and we are working hard behind the scenes to try to limit the impact on them and the wider sector.
We will continue to monitor the situation daily. Any updates to our service will be posted via our e-list, our website www.chapter.org and on our social media channels.
Please do not contact box office
A number of touring companies have already asked to postpone their performance date(s) at Chapter. We are now in the process of contacting these companies and artists who are due to perform at the venue during this period of closure with the intention of rescheduling the shows to a date later in the year. Similarly, for films and exhibitions.
If you have a ticket or tickets for a forthcoming performance or screening, Chapter will be in contact with you by email to arrange a credit note or refund. Please be patient and bear with us. There are a lot of customers to contact and our team are working as quickly as they can.
Help protect and secure the future of Chapter
This closure and the decline in business over previous weeks has placed Chapter in a very precarious financial situation. We are reliant on the income from tickets, memberships, donations, room hire and the Caffi-Bar to operate as a business and this closure is likely to have a devastating impact on the organisation.
As a registered charity, we really need your help to secure the future of our arts centre and all the work we do in the community.
We ask that if you can afford to do so, you donate the value of your ticket(s) to Chapter. If you are not a current ticket-holder, we ask you to consider making a donation online via the button below.
Although we have not officially been advised by UK government to close, we now feel we are at a point where this is the only course of action open to us. We appreciate that these are very difficult and uncertain times but whilst our building is closed, we remain committed to our role as a valuable community and artistic resource and we are exploring ways to connect with and inspire everyone digitally. We encourage you to keep visiting our website and following our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook channels where we will provide updates and make digital content available as frequently as possible.
In the meantime, Chapter urges its customers, residents and stakeholders to remain safe and look after each another. We are determined to re-open in order to deliver Chapter’s unique offer as soon as is safe and we look forward to welcoming you back to the venue then.
Thank you for your understanding and your support at this challenging time.
