Darkest Hour (PG)

UK/2017/125mins/PG. Dir: Joe Wright. With: Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James

Within days of becoming Prime Minister, Winston Churchill must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a sceptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history. With an transformative central performance from Gary Oldman, this is a moving tribute to the Greatest Generation.

"An Oscar-buzzed performance acts as the stoic centre of Joe Wright’s retelling of the events of 1940...not so much a period war movie as a high-octane political thriller...there’s no doubt about it, Gary Oldman is terrific as Churchill...a tremendous performance here, and it’s impossible not to enjoy it. It’s as if his establishment panjandrum George Smiley was suddenly infused with the spirit of Sid Vicious"
