Derived from the Written: Henriette Heimdal and Leah Meredith

Art in the Bar

'Derived from the Written' shows the work of Henriette Heimdal and Leah Meredith. Both artists explore the idea of revealing a written story through their chosen medium. Using photography, Heimdal portrays figures from ancient Norwegian folklore in uncanny ways; drifting through the Welsh and Norwegian landscape, she shines her flash on the traces of the natural and industrial world to tell the stories of these eerie figures. Meredith’s paintings appropriate images from press cuttings around the topic of refugees, highlighting each individual's story. By her portrayal of these people as lone figures, she takes them away from all of the written assumptions and catastrophic imagery that we see in mass media and captures an intimate and sincere portrait of humanity.
