Festival of Voice: Finery + Charlie Francis & Cotton Wolf
Festival of Voice and Bubblewrap Collective present
Finery is the moniker for the dark, industrial electronica stemming from the collective minds of long-term Cardiff natives Charlie Francis and Jemma Roper. Having met in the early 2000s when Francis mixed a track for Roper’s former band, Sammo Hung, this most recent collaboration builds on their gradually evolved and intuitive working partnership. Combining Francis’ well-renowned skills as a producer (R.E.M., High Llamas, Creation Records) with Roper’s lyrical prowess and unique vocal, Finery conjures images of unsettling dystopian futures lingering behind a benign-looking present.
Charlie Francis will also be performing tracks from his 'Songs for Singers' project. Motivated by the desire to write on themes beyond love and relationships, this project charts much broader aspects of the human condition. Calling on the talents of musicians Charlie has worked with, 'Songs For Singers' delivers some of South Wales' finest vocalists.
Cotton Wolf brings together the Welsh ‘Super Producer’ Llion Robertson and classically-trained composer Seb Goldfinch. Embracing the conflicts between man and machine in an ever-digitising world, the duo create epic soundscapes with minimalist vocals. With themes engaging with the connection and disconnection found in our interactions with technology, the electronic backdrops are mediated through the pair’s deft, warming and human approach to production.
