Happy End (15)

France/2017/108mins/15/subs. Dir: Michael Haneke. With: Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mathieu Kassovitz, Toby Jones

The Laurent family sits upon a sprawling estate in Calais, a lucrative construction business, and is a hotbed of dysfunction. Coming into this family is wayward Eve, the estranged daughter of Thomas, whose sister Anne is the matriarch of the family and the business. The family’s prosaic dramas (Anne’s coming engagement, her deadbeat son and the secretive Thomas) plays out against the backdrop of the more perilous problems of the migrants who live and work in the family business and the city. A blistering satire of the bourgeois bubble, with masterful director Haneke’s dazzlingly subtle weaving of themes of surveillance and psychological violence.

"It is unmistakably his work, presented with his usual masterly compositional flair, a mosaic of horror… Yet here there is an intriguing new tang of comedy or even grisly farce… a black comedy of pure sociopathy."
