Journey’s End (12A)

UK/2017/108mins/12a Dir: Saul Dibb With: Sam Claflin, Paul Bettany, Asa Butterfield

In the trenches of World War I, youthful new recruit Lieutenant Raleigh has pulled strings to join his childhood hero Captain Stanhope on the front line. But Stanhope is horrified by Raleigh’s arrival into the tension and claustrophobia of the officers’ dugout, where they are anticipating a massive German advance. Altered almost beyond recognition by his years at the front, Stanhope is sustained only by one thought: that when the war is over he can return to his beloved, Raleigh’s sister Margaret. RC Sheriff’s classic 1928 play is adapted with ambition and sensitivity, informed by modern psychological insights setting its gaze on the harrowing costs of war.

"There isn’t a weak link in a pitch perfect ensemble cast that stretches from Paul Bettany’s kindly, honourable father figure Osborne, to Toby Jones philosophical cook Mason and Sam Claflin’s embittered leader. All underplay beautifully, conveying the quiet reality of a desperate situation. It is a governing sense of restraint that lends the film such an emotional kick, and breathes fresh life into an old classic."
