Lleisiau / Voices

The fire and brimstone of revivalist preachers, the recitation of medieval verse and Richard Burton performing Dylan Thomas are familiar to us all as a shorthand for the richness of Welsh vocal traditions. Lleisiau / Voices is a performance project and live internet broadcast that aims to discover and present a collection of lesser celebrated Welsh voices. A call went out across the nation asking for people to share their talents. A search for the diverse and overlooked ways in which people use their voices in their everyday lives.

We have spoken to auctioneers, market traders, spoken word poets and newspaper sellers and gathered voices from Bangor, Wrexham, Rhaeadr, Llanelli and Cardiff. At the time of writing the lines are still open and the final line–up is still unknown. What is known is that there will be a specially commissioned performance streamed live from The New York City Players and poetry streamed from New Zealand.

The result is a survey of what a few people in a brief period of time managed to gather together to show some of the uses of voice in contemporary Wales. It is an incomplete and incompleteable survey, and one that we intend to continue.

Lleisiau is a Dylan Thomas 100 commission by the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Government. Thanks to Ffwrnes, Llanelli, Oriel Wrecsam, UndegUn, This Project, Theatr Mwldan, Pontio, Bangor Jean Forsythe, Mayor of Bangor.

All performances of Lleisiau / Voices will be live streamed over the internet. The stream is embedded below and free to view.
