Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (18)

USA/2018/96mins/18 Dir: Stephen Loveridge

Compiled from over 700 hours of footage, this is an intimate documentary about the Sri Lanka-born, London-bred singer-songwriter Mathangi ‘Maya’ Arulpragasm. A refugee who fled Jaffna for London at the age of 11 with her mother as her father stayed to fight in their home country’s civil war, as the artist M.I.A. she has built her career on a thrillingly mercurial blend of sonic experimentation, media provocation and impassioned, often unpopular political activism.

"A raw document of Arulpragasm’s life it’s a treasure trove of intimate insights, and fashions an image of Arulpragasm as an artist who documents things as they happen, rather than shooting material that slots neatly into a shiny, predetermined PR narrative."
