The Miseducation of Cameron Post (15)

USA/2018/91mins/15. Dir: Desiree Akhavan. With: Chloë Grace Moretz, Jennifer Ehle

It is 1993 in small town America and Cameron falls in mutual love with a girl at Sunday school and when they are caught out she is sent to a teen conversion camp and she attends sessions with Dr Marsh and Rev Rick. Going against the aims of the facility, she finds solidarity with a couple of her classmates and learns how to survive an intolerant world. A fantastic follow-up to to Akhavan’s debut Appropriate Behaviour, this adaptation of Emily Danforth’s novel has been a festival favourite all over the globe. Despite the period setting, this themes of the film speaks clearly to current far-right policies on both sides of the Atlantic, making this tender, moving and gripping narrative particularly important viewing in understanding the times we live in.

"offers a powerful rejoinder to anyone who'd shame people into denying their authentic selves. In its own modest way, it's one of the year's bravest films."
