Behind the scenes on CAITLIN
Posted on: 13 Jul 2015 by Light Ladd & Emberton
Light Ladd & Emberton write about their forthcoming show CAITLIN, a dance performance about Dylan Thomas’ wife and their relationship...
Two weeks till rehearsals start; three weeks till our first show at Chapter; and only 39 days and counting till our Edinburgh Fringe opening night... So how are things going in the CAITLIN camp?
Well, the good news is we already have an award-winning show – Best Dance Production in the Wales Theatre Awards 2015, and with only 20 seats per show we know audience demand for tickets is very high. The venues are sorted; the creative team are too. We’ve got great images and copy already in hand. Our Edinburgh accommodation is booked, but have you seen the price?? Last but not least, we’ve booked flights for five cast/ crew - and then rebooked them when the airline pulled the route!
We’ve rehired costumes, and sourced 40 exactly specified folding chairs in two colours, plus we had a frankly hilarious team meeting a couple of weeks ago about consumables for the show. What’s the best gsm for sheets of A4 paper that need to be chewed up? What title book does Dylan read in the show? What colour of IKEA plastic cups did we settle on? Plus how many bonbons do we need to buy from the sweetie shop in town, and can we get the guy to count them out or should we just guess the total number in a given weight of grams? All will be revealed as to why we need these and how they get used in the show...
We met the other companies and artists going to Edinburgh as part of ACW’s Wales in Edinburgh strand: www.walesinedinburgh.org.uk. The Fringe office have heard from us quite a few times as well; once because we’ve been making a virtual beeline for various programmers to see the show in Cardiff and Edinburgh, but also because off the back of Dylan Thomas Day (14 May), we’ve been hard at work planning a flurry of activity on 31 July, the date of Caitlin’s death. Watch your feeds for #CAITLINday...
