Chapter Voices: Caitlin Davies

Posted on: 30 Aug 2017 by Caitlin Davies

My name is Caitlin Davies and I am a Curatorial Volunteer at Chapter. I began volunteering at Chapter in June 2016 and in January 2017, started an MA Degree in Curating at University of West England so Chapter was an obvious venue for my placement alongside my MA. Over the past year, I have been able to take part in and support so many of the different activities, events and exhibitions that Chapter host. I have already learned so much about the function of a curator and the other roles it takes to run such an eccentric and community-based art centre.

As part of my degree, I am required to curate something here at Chapter; my mentors Hannah Firth and Catherine Angle have supervised as I curated the Art in the Bar that will be up in Chapter’s Caffi Bar during the months of September and October.

The exhibition title is 'Derived From the Written' that shows the work of Henriette Heimdal and Leah Meredith. Both artists explore the idea of revealing a written story through their chosen medium.

Using photography, Heimdal portrays figures from ancient Norwegian folklore in uncanny ways; drifting through the Welsh and Norwegian landscape, she shines her flash on the traces of the natural and industrial world to tell the stories of these eerie figures.

Meredith’s paintings appropriate images from press cuttings around the topic of refugees, highlighting each individual's story. By her portrayal of these people as lone figures, she takes them away from all of the written assumptions and catastrophic imagery that we see in mass media and captures an intimate and sincere portrait of humanity. Alongside the exhibition, I will be organising and hosting a panel discussion, which will include myself, both artists and invited guests.

This project has allowed me to work with emerging artists and experience what it is like to create an exhibition and event here at Chapter. It required working alongside many different teams in Chapter to cover different strands of the exhibition – from the visual arts team who helped me to get the ball rolling, to the gallery technicians who will help to set everything up in the days leading to the opening. It really is a team effort and I have found so much support from all the staff here at Chapter. The experience has been a huge learning curve and has confirmed my desire to pursue curating as a career – I look forward to seeing what the future has to hold.
