Chapter Voices: Ellie Russell

Posted on: 16 May 2017 by Ellie Russell

It’s been a year since Chapter launched its Dementia Friendly programme.  I came on board in January 2017, already aware of the great work that was being done and excited to be a part of it.

People with dementia are an important part of our Chapter community and we want to make sure that as a venue we are providing a relaxed, supportive and inclusive environment so that people are able to come together and learn from each other.

One of my first tasks was to start looking at what was going on in the local area for people with dementia; initially to try and make sure our monthly dementia friendly film screenings didn’t clash with any regular clinics or support groups.

It soon became clear that there was no ‘perfect’ day and time, but what grew from this research was the realisation that Cardiff was home to some really innovative, engaging and creative work, by many different groups, each with the ultimate aim of improving life for people with dementia and their friends and family.

This is where the idea for our one day festival, Tinted Lens: A festival of the mind, memory & ageing, was born, in collaboration with Katie Featherstone, a Social Scientist at Cardiff University.

On Wednesday 17 May we aim to bring people together to raise awareness, discuss important issues and to be entertained by some fantastic dementia friendly screenings and special performances.

There is currently no known cure for dementia, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t do anything to make a difference to people who’ve been diagnosed with what can be a very frightening and isolating disease.

At Chapter our aim is to show that we CAN make a difference, and that we as a community can work together to improve quality of life, provide comfort, and reduce isolation for people with dementia and those that love them.

We would love for you to be a part of our dementia friendly community!  For more information, please email
