#GivingTuesday: Steve Blandford
Posted on: 17 Nov 2015 by Steve Blandford
#GivingTuesday (1st December 2015) is a global day of giving. Whether it’s making a donation, volunteering your time or just spreading the word at the start of the Christmas shopping season, #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to come together to show the world why it’s good to give.
In 2015 Chapter is taking part and will spend the day encouraging people, charities and businesses to donate time, money or their voice to help us. Here, Chapter Trustee Steve Blandford tells us why he gives his support to Chapter and why you should too!
Add your voice and make sure to take part by sharing your story with us on #GivingTuesday.
At a time when there are constant demands on everyone to give to good causes it is difficult to single out one from hundreds that we might think worth our attention (and money). I support Chapter Arts Centre because it has offered something very special to its community for a very long time and would like to carry on doing that, and doing it even better.
Yes, it looks like a thriving café/bar and cinema, and indeed it is. But its also a place that offers space to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to be creative and experience other people’s exciting work. It offers us all the chance, even for a few moments in busy lives, to stop and think about the world in a different way and from points of view that might be very different from our own. Chapter has worked very hard to be less dependent on the grants that most organisations depend on to survive. It has been successful in doing that, but if it is to carry on being a place of experiment and risk-taking and to do this alongside providing affordable (free sometimes) support to a whole variety of organisations and individuals then it needs just a little charitable help. The great thing in the arts is that a little goes a very long way, so a small amount can make a big difference to somewhere like Chapter. Like many precious things in our culture we would only truly know how important Chapter was if it ever disappeared or reduced in scope. I’m sure it won’t, but let’s make sure!
If, like me, you think that Cardiff is very lucky to have a place like Chapter then please consider a small donation on Giving Tuesday.
