Chapter Archive: Rose Wylie Posted on 15 May 2020

Next year we celebrate our 50th Birthday. To mark this momentous occasion we’re looking back through our archive at some of the incredible events, exhibitions, gigs, gatherings and people who’ve made Chapter what it is today.

This week we’re diving in to our more recent past to celebrate our collaboration with critically acclaimed artist Rose Wylie whose exhibition ‘Tilt The Horizontal Into A Slant’ enchanted and engaged more than 6000 visitors in 2016.

Wylie’s bold, occasionally chaotic, often unpredictable paintings take inspiration from the first-hand imagery of her everyday life as well as films, newspapers, magazines, and television. Often working from memory, she distils her subjects into succinct observations, using text to give additional emphasis to her recollections. By weaving together imagery from different sources with personal elements, Wylie's paintings offer a wry commentary on contemporary culture.

We were thrilled to produce a new book to accompany the exhibition which featured a text from writer and poet Cherry Smyth, a transcript of a conversation between Wylie and her long-term collaborator, artist Ben Rivers, and a host of images of works from the exhibition. The publication was designed by Nelmes Design and you can read and download it free here:
