Janek Alexander

We were very sad to learn that Janek Alexander, former Theatre Programmer and, later, Artistic Director of Chapter, passed away on Thursday 16 April.

Janek was above all a champion of the arts and artists and, during his time as Theatre Programmer, brought ground-breaking and challenging works to audiences in Wales. As Artistic Director, he steered a growing programme team without ego, gently supporting staff to take risks, embrace the bold, and to connect with the world outside of Chapter’s walls.

Janek was passionately committed to every aspect of Chapter’s work and led the organisation through some incredibly difficult times. He always refused to compromise his artistic vision, instead exploring innovative ways that Chapter could reconfigure and re-connect with audiences and with artists to make it (and them) more resilient.

Janek had a collegiate and informal spirit and inspired and supported so many people. He will be remembered for his generosity, creative energy and fierce intellect.

We send our warmest wishes to Janek’s friends and family. We hope that, when Chapter re-opens, we will be able to hold a tribute event with his many friends and colleagues who will be keen to remember Janek with us. We will keep you posted via our news channels.

We thank you Janek!
