Mel Brimfield: Ungeziefer Posted on 01 May 2020

On 20 March we were due to open From This World, To That Which Is To Come, an exhibition by Mel Brimfield.

Featuring works that range from the darkly comic to the startlingly affirmative, the exhibition is a multi-media exploration of the complex and often fragile nature of the human mind.

Sadly, we had to down tools during installation but we’re really excited to say that Mel has generously made the audio from her installation Ungeziefer available for our audiences to enjoy online.

Ungeziefer focuses on a hapless voiceover artist in a recording studio attempting to make an abridged audiobook of Franz Kafka’s ’Metamorphosis’.  The narrative of Gregor Samsa’s nightmarish transformation into a giant cockroach, and the inability of his horrified family to deal with it, is taken as a loose metaphor for the onset of schizophrenia and its frequently alienating effects.
