Phantom Rides Again

In the first of a series of radical retrospectives good cop bad cop jump back on board the Phantom Ride, with some new collaborators, to rake over the embers of things that time forgot...

Rowley and Morgan have been making experimental work together, and with others (Brith Gof, Forced Entertainment, Pearson/Brookes, National Theatre Wales) since 1990. Much of that work exists only in traces and memories.

Imagine that you have enticed an audience that have never seen cinema before, but your projector brakes and there is no way you can afford to give the rowdy crowd their money back. What would you do? You might fall back on the tricks of your old performing trade and bring pictures to life in their minds...but how much of a reliable narrator are you?

good cop bad cop announced their new production, 'Phantom Rides Again!' in collaboration with a team of exciting young performers. The production is inspired by their 2008 work, 'Phantom Ride', a performance based on traces of the lost works of pioneering South Wales based filmmaker William Haggar, but also offers a re-presentation of their own lost performance works, and explores the way fragments of evidence and potentially faulty memories can create an alternative narrative...fake news!

Taking the lead from silent movies that were equally understandable to audiences whatever their language, they'll be using a mixture of English, Welsh, British Sign Language and other visual and theatrical languages to bring the stories to life. As such the standard of the language may be 'variable, colloquial and informal without translation. In a structured yet improvised performance, anything could happen.

In 2018 Phantom Rides Again delves deeper into the telling and retelling of stories, languages, reliability and credibility...fake news.

Language: English / Cymraeg / BSL - Incorporates elements of BSL within the performance

"Phantom Ride elevates the art of the unreliable narrator to a new level-its very unreliability is unreliable....clever, funny and filled with deadpan charm"
Andrzej Lukowski, Metro 2008
