There Will Be Blood (15)
USA/2007/158mins/15 Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson With: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Dillon Freasier
Daniel Plainview, a miner in the American frontier, happens upon black gold and using plain-spoken language, Plainview launches a campaign to convince small-town property owners they should let him drill their land and builds an empire. His systematic and steadfast approach to mastering the oil business becomes an obsession with the intrinsic value of power and a paranoid desire to retain control. Meeting his match in Eli Sunday, a teenage preacher, Plainview must suffer the opposing whims of this "prophet”, unclear if either man is prepared to pay the humiliating price the other wants to exact. This is an epic portrait of the two strands of what it means to be an American: the capitalist entrepreneurial spirit and deep-felt religion, two sides of the same coin of American ideology that have led us to the rise of the Trumpian era.
Paul Thomas Anderson Over the last twenty years, writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson has consistently and thoroughly examined the joys and horrors of humanity through his powerful filmmaking. Despite attending film school for only two days, this son of a late-night horror host has created some of the greatest films of the 21st century, relying on his obsessive consumption of the visual medium and collaborating with the most immense talents in acting, photography and music. We present a short season, starting with his first feature Hard Eight to demonstrate how his compelling and epic character portraits have led to the new film Phantom Thread and the swansong of actor Daniel Day-Lewis.
