Viva Varda: Vagabond (15)
France/1985/110mins/15. Dir: Agnès Varda. With: Sandrine Bonnaire
Mona is dead, her frozen body found in a ditch in the French countryside. It is from this starting point that the film flashes back to look at what happened to her in the weeks leading up to her death in a series of documentary-style interviews with those who knew her as she moves from place to place, taking odd jobs and sleeping where she can. A fiercely independent woman, Mona’s desire to be free rather than plumb for easy comforts eventually leads to her demise. A dark and disturbing tale of people on the margins of society, this is a masterpiece from Varda whose investigative eye is suited to this mix of documentary and fiction and whose photography captures the bleak, cold nature of the life of an outsider.
