In a bleak apartment surrounded by industrial gloom, Henry lives alone. After getting his girlfriend Mary pregnant, news which is not joyful to either of them, they marry and she moves in. The baby, a strange creature, will not stop crying and Henry begins to find escape in a dreamlike world. David Lynch described his first feature as “a dream of dark and troubling things”. Funded by a paper round, the American Film Institute and the actress Sissy Spacek (who was married to production designer Jack Fisk), the original and uncompromising vision of this debut feature played in midnight screenings for years, catapulting Lynch into the international stage and cementing its reputation as the ultimate cult movie.
