Kimiko Ikegami, Miki Jinbo
A schoolgirl and her friends travel to her aunt’s remote country home, but not all is as it seems. Tasked with creating a Horror genre film for the Toho studio Ôbayashi consulted his teenage daughter, Chigumi and created this hyper-real cinematic Horror-Fantasy. Packed full of vivid animated sequences, dreamlike logic and unforgettable moments of avant-garde, hyperactive silliness. This is a cult classic and unlike any film seen before or since.
Screening as part of BFI Japan 2021: 100 years of Japanese Cinema, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network. bfijapan.co.uk
