Rejecting his cultured upper-class background as a classical pianist, Robert Dupea has more recently been working in a California oil field and spending time with his waitress girlfriend, Rayette. But when Robert discovers that his father is gravely ill, he wants to reunite with his estranged family in the northwest. He and Rayette take a road trip that brings the two paths of his life to an uncomfortable intersection. A film about coming to a turning point: for Robert he must confront his old money past in order to look to the future and for a country on the cusp of its bicentenary coming to terms with its place as a world power. This film is also a showcase of the acting talents of Jack Nicolson, at the peak of his powers and not yet leaning into audience perceptions of him and the luminous Karen Black.

“This superbly composed film comes as close to perfection as it gets.”
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
