After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is befriended by Elliot. Bringing him to his house, Elliott introduces E.T., to his brother and his little sister, and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. When government officials track down the visitor, it puts both Elliot and his friend in danger and they embark on a mission to get E.T. back home.
