A young woman named Savannah Knoop spends six years pretending to be the celebrated author JT LeRoy, the made-up literary persona of her sister-in-law. Savannah fooled the literary world in the 1990s with three books of fiction, which were purportedly semi-autobiographical accounts of teenage drug and sexual abuse. Based on Savannah’s memoirs and with pitch perfect casting, this is a film about fame and identity that would seem far-fetched if it were not true.
