Two women meet in the delivery room, both having made the same decision to go it alone as mothers. Janis is middle-aged, resolved and delighted to find herself with child; Ana is a teenager, overwhelmed and regretful. Building mutual support, they soon discover how their lives are entwined in ways they may not have imagined. Meanwhile, Janis is trying to help her village excavate a mass grave killed during Franco’s ‘White Terror’ where they suspect members of her family are buried. Birth, death, motherhood and fate: Almodóvar weaves these stories with high melodrama and moments of emotional stillness - and his muse Penélope Cruz has rarely been better.
