Mon 1 January 0001 - Sat 16 July 2022

Somali | 2021 | 82’ | TBC | Khadar Ayderus Ahmed | Arabic with English subtitles
Omar Abdi, Yasmin Warsame, Kadar Abdoul-Aziz Ibrahim

Guled, a struggling gravedigger living in the slums of Djibouti city, is working hard to make ends meet. His beloved wife Nasra, who suffers from a chronic kidney disease, desperately needs a transplant. An appropriate donor is found, but in order to buy the kidney, Guled needs to collect, in only two weeks, as much money as a gravedigger normally earns in a year so his rebellious but enterprising son takes to the streets with his friends to hustle for money. The Somalia entry for the Oscars, this is a moving drama: headily romantic and simmering with anger.

And Then They Burn the Sea
Quatar | 2021 | 12’ | NC | Majid Al-Remaihi | Arabic with English subtitles

An elegiac contemplation on familial memory. Al-Remaihi weaves family archive, ritual and re-enacted dreams as he considers his mother’s gradual memory loss. A film that underlines the promise of cinema as a medium for memories even at their most irretrievable.

Authentically embedded in the everyday fabric of life on the impoverished outskirts of Djibouti, its perspective free from exoticization or condescension.” Guy Lodge, Variety
