As fascism and terror spread through France, German refugee Georg flees Paris and heads to Marseille. Living among refugees from around the world, Georg falls for Marie, a mysterious woman searching for her husband, whilst also befriending a young North African boy. A haunting thriller based on a 1942 novel by German writer Anna Seghers, this film blurs time periods, allowing Petzold to explore the continued plight of displaced people.
