Iman and his wife Najmeh are excited when his career as a judge is given a boost with a promotion, but his student daughters are uncomfortable about their place in a changing world. With the benefits of advancement in the regime come more scrutiny. Encouraged to wave through death sentences without considering evidence, Iman’s divided loyalties are exposed when his government-issued handgun goes missing and suspicion falls on the women in his home. What had been a meditative family drama becomes a gripping thriller about the dividing lines in Iranian society. Filmed in secret, with the filmmakers fleeing Iran for fears of their safety (actress Soheila Gostani publicly protested the hijab), this is a mesmerising drama about familial bonds tested by people accepting toxic regimes and the courage it takes to resist them.
