Wonder Wheel (12A)

USA/2017/101mins/12A Dir: Woody Allen. With Kate Winslet, Jim Belushi, Justin Timberlake, Juno Temple

In 1950s Coney Island, New York, Ginny works as a waitress in a clam bar and lives with her 10-year-old son, Richie and her second husband, Humpty in a cramped apartment directly across from the giant blue Ferris wheel but longs for the more carefree days when she was younger. In walks lifeguard Mickey Rubin, with a confident postwar bloom: a playwright at NYU with a flat in Greenwich Village. To Mickey, having a summer fling with Ginny doesn’t have to mean anything, but to Ginny it's her last chance of hope. Her moment of sweetness is brought to a halt with the arrival of Humpty's estranged daughter Carolina who is on the run from the mob. A beautifully shot and assured drama from the film laureate of 20th century New York.

"Almost as much the auteur here as Allen himself, [Cinematographer Vittorio] Storaro enlivens the movie’s mood with blue-toned nighttime love scenes, the bright yellows of the the Coney boardwalk, and reddish hues streaming into a bedroom after dark...a mesmerizing portrait of being abandoned by the world."
