Summer in our gallery
- Published:
It’s your last chance to see the works of Imogen Stidworthy and Nina Thomas, two artists who ask us to attune to different frequencies of communication.
This summer, we look forward to welcoming Roy Claire Potter and Lu Williams who invite us to imagine alternative futures.
Read on to learn more about these exhibitions…
Roy Claire Potter: COMMS FAIL
Shaped by an autistic approach to communication, where meaning is not only carried by words but through pattern, rhythm, texture and environment. Sound moves through objects, surfaces and bodies.
COMMS FAIL is an evolving project moving across performance, radio, exhibition and publication, with each version building from the last. This iteration extends a live performance first staged in Liverpool and broadcast on Resonance FM, into a month-long listening environment.
Roy is an artist writer whose practice spans experimental writing, vocal performance, drawing, sound art and installation. Their work explores communication constraints, subtext and complex group dynamics – often with a wilful humour.
Join us on Friday 26 June, 6-8pm to celebrate the opening.
Lu Williams: Acquisition Ongoing: Carbon Age Souvenirs
Using posters and zine templates, Lu invites you to contribute to an evolving installation imagining what the world might look like hundreds of years from now.
Lu is an artist working across sculpture, print, zines and socially engaged projects. Their practice explores social history, labour and accessibility through the lens of queerness, neurodivergence and working-class experience.
Join us for the opening celebration on Friday 29 May from 6–8pm. You can make magnet relics, add to the artwork and get a temporary tattoo! Free to drop in.
Nina Thomas: The Broken Speaker
On view in our café bar, Nina Thomas’ The Broken Speaker rethinks how we understand sound and voice through a deaf lens.
This silent film uses captioning to draw attention to breath, hesitation and the spaces between words, inviting us to listen differently and find shared understanding in unexpected places.
Imogen Stidworthy: In a thread of air
Through installation and film, Imogen explores what it means to have a voice, and what it means to listen, inviting us to engage with communication beyond words, through gesture, rhythm and atmosphere.
Our group viewing sessions offer space for informal shared reflection over tea and coffee.
Also, join us for an improvised dance piece by Hijinx Academy in response to installation Balayer – A Map of Sweeping.
