About us

Chapter is an international centre for contemporary arts and culture, rooted in the heart of Cardiff, Wales.

Established by artists Christine Kinsey and Bryan Jones and writer Mik Flood in 1971 to celebrate experimentation and radical thought, we’ve been a catalyst for creativity and critical thinking ever since.

Our dynamic multi-artform programme forms a constellation of radical and experimental ideas and practices. Across visual art, film, performance, and multidisciplinary projects, we seek to explore the most urgent questions of our time. We value imagination and risk-taking, investing in artists and communities as world-builders. Our approach is collaborative and committed to our community – artists, audiences, neighbours, staff and cultural workers – on our doorstep, in Wales and beyond.

Alongside our curated public programme, we’re also home to more than 50 artists and creative companies who are based in our studios. From award-winning animators and film production companies to artists, designers, photographers, and bespoke art framers, print and recording studios, our creative community are at the heart of everything we do.

Our programme and communities come together in our award-winning Caffi Bar that seats around 120 people and is a great place to meet up with friends, find a quiet spot to work away from home, or tuck in to our freshly prepared, locally sourced food and drink.

Many people also visit us to attend the range of exciting classes, workshops and events that are brought to you by different local businesses every day. Try your hand at printmaking, Lindy Hop, Tae Kwando, ballet, tap, music for babies, youth orchestra and so much more, in the inclusive atmosphere of our relaxed venue. We also offer a range of unique, low-cost spaces for hire if you’re looking for an unusual film location, an accessible venue for a conference or meeting, or somewhere to celebrate a special occasion.

Accessibility

Our building has flat access through automatic doors and lift access to the first floor.  We have a free car park with six spaces designated for Blue Badge holders and all of our auditoria and hire spaces, plus our Caffi Bar and information desk, are fitted with Hearing Assistive devices.

We have all-gender and single-gender toilets, disabled access and Changing Place facilities throughout the building.
