Photographer and trailblazer Tish Murtha dedicated her life to documenting the lives of working-class people in the North East. Leaving home in the mid-70s to study at the School of Documentary Photography at Newport, she returned to Newcastle to highlight the hardship that the Conservative government of the day had wrought on the families there. Despite the searing power of her work leading to questions in the House of Commons, she was marginalised by the Arts community and struggled to support herself and her daughter. In this moving portrait by Paul Sng, we see a life lived in the heat of creativity which leaves an influential legacy.
“Gripping portrait of a passionate photographer... a tremendous, humane tribute to a real artist.”
-Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
