John McClane is visiting his estranged wife and daughters on Christmas Eve. He joins her at her Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza, but the festivities are interrupted by a group of terrorists who take over the corporate high-rise, taking everyone inside hostage. McClane realises that in order to save the employees he must come bearing arms as well as gifts.
