Jamie McGregor is a young man taking his A-levels in the new town of Stevenage with one thing on his mind, to lose his virginity before he goes to university. His friend Spike seems to be having more success, but whilst Jamie has his eyes on the glamorous Mary, he must first learn to talk to women like people, not potential conquests. As Britain discovered teenagers and its pop culture was spreading all over the globe, this enjoyable film with an unforgettable soundtrack by The Spencer Davis Group, is a great example of how changing attitudes were being reflected on the big screen.

 + Stevenage (short)
UK | 1971 | 21’ | NC | Gordon Ruttan
In post-war Britain, with the optimism of Atlee’s progressive government, a set of new towns were set up to combat the country’s housing crisis. Stevenage was the first of these experiments, starting life afresh in the countryside of Hertfordshire with newly-built modern houses, plenty of local employers, a thriving shopping centre and efficient infrastructure. This short documentary looks at the town shortly after the setting of Here We Go Around the Mulberry Bush, capturing the hopeful atmosphere of life there, demonstrating why young people at the time felt so jubilant and free.
