Marjane is a carefree 8-year-old beloved of her grandmother and parents, all living together in Tehran when the Shah is deposed. The politics of the country seem far away until her uncle is imprisoned and the Ayatollah’s regressive regime closes in. As she grows up, Marjane becomes more rebellious. As a punk-loving teenager she becomes more aware of growing tensions and her family begins to consider leaving their home. An emotionally powerful and enthralling autobiographical tale, told in stark black and white echoing Satrapi’s groundbreaking graphic novel. As we mourn her passing, we celebrate her debut work that articulated the voices of bold young people all over the world.
