Suffering from insomnia, Vietnam veteran and disturbed loner Travis Bickle takes a job as a New York City cabbie, haunting the streets every night, growing increasingly detached from reality. When Travis meets pretty campaign worker Betsy, he becomes obsessed with the idea of saving the world, dreaming of cleaning up the filthy city, making it better than the depraved place full of sin he perceives it to be. He begins by plotting to assassinate a presidential candidate, then directing his attentions toward rescuing adolescent prostitute Iris. This neo-noir from Martin Scorsese, written by Paul Schrader with an hypnotic score by Bernard Herrmann (his final work for the screen) is considered one of the masterpieces of American cinema and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
